Explorer

Explorer is a solar-powered art piece with a dynamically scaled frame rate, designed to conserve energy during those dark winter days. It gracefully navigates through stunning landscapes, from harsh mountains to rounded hills and stretched-out salt lakes. The graphics draw inspiration from the mesmerizing Mars-demo created by Tim Clarke, which flawlessly ran on a 386 processor.

Explorer's framerate is throttled by the amount of energy left in the 18650 li-ion battery. When it's fully charged it's running at one frame per second and it will throttle down to one frame per hour when the battery is running out of juice. Explorer will charge its battery using the two solar panels which can be rotated towards the sun using the gold-plated SMA connectors. The device lasts for more than one month in complete darkness and with sufficient solar energy it won't ever turn off.

Oh and did I mention it sports a golden 1000uF electrolytic capacitor? Sweet right!?

Sol

Sol can depict any position and trajectory of the sun. Every day the sun’s path changes. The exact path the sun takes through the sky depends not only on the date but also on the physical location of the observer. Around the equator the sun rises almost perpendicular to the horizon this stands in stark contrast to the very shallow slope of the sunrise in the polar regions; here, depending on the season the sun might not even rise above the horizon at all. Sol reveals the different pathways the sun can take from anywhere in the world. It clarifies the movements of the sun.
